SWORDFISH Surf Series - Medewi Beach (8 August, 2010)

The VQS season finally came around and we kicked it off in Medewi beach, Bali West Side. Beauty and the beasts was the main caption of this event, as the amazing natural scenery of this spot was held captive by the riders tearing it up in the water.
All the kids had their hands high up in the air ready to participate in the event. Many of them were alumni from last year’s Pro Am including players like Dwi Marnox, Kamal, Umar. Given that the coast is filled with rocks and coral, the groms started the session since it would be safer while the tide was still high.

Umar Anas, the little bro of last year’s contestant Aswar Anas, charged the sets and fought a solid battle against his competitors. Ranu, Aldi and Endi answered the call, and they all made it through into the final of the groms division.

A contestant from the Junior division.

In the Junior division, last year’s contestant Samsul Hidayat swerved and swaggered in the water with the class of Sinatra on stage. But he wasn’t alone in showcasing his moves with Dayat, Abi and Soleh Mahendra stepping to him to take it into the final.

Rad action from Pro Am contestant.

The Pro Am division didn’t change much from the last competition in terms of talent, with Ari Mustofa, Dwi Marnox, Abi and Komang Ari heading through into the final.

By the time we got into the finals the tide was low and the stakes were raised, as the big rocks and sharp coral threatened to break more than just surfboards. But this didn’t deter the boys and they pushed on, with Umar Anas emerging to be the best in his division.

Muklis Anwar, the Aerial show winner.

The ocean showed no mercy to the Junior division, as the water kept getting lower, but it didn’t stop Abi's quest in becoming the best in this division. He faced strong competition from Dayat who only managed to get to 2nd place. Meanwhile, in the Aerial contest, Muklis jumped and flew his way up to have the best aerial maneuver.

In the Pro Am finals the competition was tight, but eventually it was Dwi Marnox that slipped his way through the cracks and scored the highest points. All of the finalists from today secured their spot to be in the VQS Final next year.

WILD IN THE PARK Stop #3 - GOR Saparua, Bandung (18 September, 2010)

The final regional qualification for Volcom Indonesia’s Wild In The Park series 2010 brought us to the cool and breathe easy city of Bandung; a city appropriately dubbed by the Dutch as “Paris van Java” or “Paris from Java”.

The playground.

For this competition we had to transform another basketball court into a skate park, Indonesia desperately needs more skate parks. Dear government officials and local council members, please LET THE KIDS RIDE FREE. And there is no shortage of kids that do want to ride, as nearly 100 skaters rocked up for this final qualification.

Bandung contestants.

Bagus Alvito, boardslide.

In the Beginner division we went through several heats to arrive at the top 8 who would proceed into the final. Carlo Aulia and Alvito made all the right moves and landed all the tricks that marked them as the contenders to beat in this division.

Pevi Permana, crook grind.

The Open division brought us some of Indonesia’s biggest names in skating including Pevi Permana, Indra “domdom”, Andrew Remote and many others. It was definitely a showdown of the finest to land a place in the Jakarta final.

Rangga, blunt slide

The Beginner division finals were filled with twists and turns, as contestants pushed each other to raise the level of their tricks. But in the end, it was Kevin CR who shredded the course and walked away with the big cheese – 1st place.

Absar, front side nosegrind.

Morgan and Febby interviewed for a local TV channel.

Kevin, the winner of the beginner division.

Indra "Domdom", backside tailslide.

The Open division was wilder than the jungles of Congo, as these Indonesian predators went for the kill in each and every section. To our surprise, the underdog Ega MP came out of nowhere and stole the prize. While the big names were busy trying to land the big moves, Ega kept it steady and consistent and racked up the points. Smart hunter.

Skateboard Demo - Samarinda, Borneo (30 Jul-1 August, 2010)

3 days after an exhausting skate competition we had to leave for Borneo with our bodies tired and beaten up. But we sucked it up like the real men we are and decided to follow our philosophy “skate don’t hesitate”. I’m glad we did because it was a sick destination for our final skate demo and signing of the year.

Rangga, nose grind.

We started off in Balikpapan and got welcomed by the rain trying to dampen our style, so we pointed several fingers at the sky and peaced out to Samarinda after lunch.

Ryan, 50-50 down rail.

It was a 4-hour rocky ride to Samarinda and we booked ourselves into a hotel that was quite close to the skatepark and store that we were hitting up. Our trip included a short stint in Tenggarong, a smaller town on the outskirts of Samarinda, so they boys could check out some spots and get a few more bruises on their already knackered bodies.

Vandalism? No sir, this is street art.

Rangga, front side board slide.

Trick of the day.

We hung out with the local riders and shared campfire stories, and Genta decided to go for a swim in the pond after failing to land a 4 stairs 50-50 drop. Moral of the story: don’t curse the rain because you will get wet.

Raditya Rondi in a “RAD” move.

WILD IN THE PARK Stop #2 - GOR Kridosono, Jogjakarta (17 July, 2010)

The 2nd stop for the Central Regional qualifying session was Jogjakarta, a city that strongly carries the Indonesian heritage. As per usual, the morning registration was packed with kids streaming to get their names inked down onto the roster. In total we had 144 kids sign up to compete, a record number for any single competition we’ve ever hosted. It was great to see how tradition co-exists with modernity in this city.

For this leg of the tour we transformed a local gym into a skate park for the day, creating a respectable course with ramps and rails.

In the beginner’s division we had a number of contestants from Jogja along with a few from Jakarta, Solo, and other surrounding cities. From this diverse pack, Bryan, Henrico and Panjul really stood out, each completing the heat with smooth tricks and solid landings.

Norman Genta, Frontside Over Crooked.

Ryan Novianus, Smith Grind.

For the Open division, we were proud to have 2 of Volcom Indonesia’s riders, Genta and Ryan (both from Jogjakarta), jump in to qualify. This division had 102 skaters battling head to head for the chance to proceed into the finals. We were eventually left with the top 16, and although Genta’s luck ran out, Ryan scored big time with his combos proceeding to the coveted stage.

One thing 140 kids all have in common is that after a long session of skating, they all want food! We served up a finger lickin good BBQ of hotdogs and burgers, allowing our riders in the finals to fill up their tanks for the last stretch.

Clown is in the house, being funky fresh on the board.

Bryan from Jakarta killed the Beginner division, landing tricks in every section and securing his position in 1st. He was followed by Luman, Henrico, and 4 other finalists who all earned a spot in the Jakarta finals.

The Open division was sheer madness as well and certainly the highlight of the entire competition. Ariyoshi put up a solid fight landing several kick flips, and Rico Ti made his mark as well, but ultimately it was Ryan that wooed the crowd with combos of flips for a grand finish in 1st position.

Ryan went home with Electric sunglasses for his Dunkinflip and got the Hype of the Day prize as well.

There’s always time for freebies and giveaways!

Indra and his charity mission, makes the kids go wild.

Beginner division (17 & Under):
